As the days get longer, we get more & more excited about extended evening light and more opportunities for shooting outside (in addition to warmer weather, all the amazing plants in bloom and garden vegetables starting to take root)! One look at our calendar and it’s clear to see–it is prime-time for Engagement Sessions.
For many, this name is a bit confusing. True, you are more than likely already engaged if you are booking photography for your wedding and an “engagement” session may sound a bit anticlimactic. We even tried to avoid the term for a while, but it has such wide recognition that it looks like it is here to stay. It could just as easily be called a get-to-know-you session or a have-an-awesome-time-in-a-really-cool-place-while-capturing-your-personality-in-photos session. Regardless of terminology, we look forward to this session with each couple we work with! It is a wonderful opportunity for us to get to know you more and discover all the qualities that make your relationship unique. Plus, you’ll end up with some great relaxed portraits from just being yourselves and enjoying each other.
There is no shortage of awesome locations in the Northwest for your session, and we highly encourage you to do a little brainstorming and be as creative as you want when choosing your location. Of course, we are happy to make some suggestions too! We recently updated our portfolio site with a new engagement gallery to get those creative juices flowing. If you have a session coming up, or just want to see the possibilities, click the large image on the right to check out the full gallery.
If you have followed our blog recently, you know this month has been a big one for us with the birth of our son, Leland! That being said, it has also been pretty quiet on the photography front (aside from taking a ton of photos of the little man). Since Leland was due in the middle of October, we made sure our schedules were relatively clear so we could spend as much time with him as possible and get accustomed to being new parents. The beautiful light and rampant color of Fall is such a spectacular setting for portraits that it has been strange to not get out and take advantage of the season as much as years past. Luckily, I was able to meet up with Ashley and Elliott in downtown Portland for an afternoon engagement session amidst the trees of the South Park Blocks and on the waterfront at the Riverplace Marina.
These two know how to have fun together, and definitely make each other smile! Although, Ashely did give a few “seriously?!” looks towards Elliott after one of his many quick-witted wise-cracks. Just keeping him on his toes! After being dubbed “Papa Bear” by Elliott, which I proudly accepted, we shot in the Park Blocks around PSU and then took the Streetcar down to the waterfront just in time for sunset. Thanks for a fun shoot you two, we are looking forward your wedding in January! In the meantime, I will do my best to live up to my new Papa Bear status.
We recently met up with Olivia & Bethany at Mt. Tabor Park on a not-so-sunny-yet-still-beautiful day for their engagement shoot. After hiking up to the top of the park (shooting along the way, of course) for a view of downtown Portland from the spot where Bethany took Olivia by surprise with her proposal, they were kind enough to climb up into a huge old oak tree at my request. Thanks you two, we are looking forward to your wedding in July!
Martin & Miki wanted to take full advantage of sunny spring skies and ample snow on Mt. Hood for their engagement session. They were not disappointed! We had a great time with them and had a lot of fun at two beautiful locations. We started off at Trillium Lake with a beautiful view of the mountain. After hiking around the lake a bit, we made our way up to Timberline Lodge to enjoy the evening light. Martin and Miki were tough as they trekked over the snow above the lodge in their sandals! We definitely appreciate it when couples we work with make that extra effort for an amazing photo–thanks guys! We are looking forward to an awesome wedding this summer!

Taking full advantage of the lovely weather, we recently met up with Kristin & David for a shoot down on Portland’s riverfront. They were true naturals in front of the camera, and we had a blast. Thanks Kristin & David, we are looking forward to your wedding in May!
We are excited to photograph Nicole and Marcus’ wedding this weekend. They are such an easygoing couple and a lot of fun to work with. We met up with them earlier this month for their engagement session in the Columbia River Gorge, and despite passing rain-squalls a great time was had by all. Thank you, Marcus and Nicole for being so relaxed despite the crazy Oregon spring weather!
Recently, we had the pleasure of spending a few hours on the Portland waterfront with Bryan & Maria for their pre-wedding session. We don’t often shoot around this part of the waterfront & had a great time exploring some new locations. A big thanks to Bryan and Maria for choosing the spot! Their wedding is this weekend, so stay tuned for more of this lovely couple.

Our first stop on our road trip last month was in Bend for a photo shoot with Josh & Stephanie. We will be photographing their wedding in Central Oregon later this month, and are looking forward to being on the sunny side of the mountains! They chose to meet in Drake Park, and we are glad that they did. The weather was definitely on the chilly side, even for early October in Bend, but we all ignored cold fingers and numb noses and had a great time. We loved all of the different aspects of this park–it is a great place for a variety of settings and the fall afternoon light was gorgeous!
